Through photography I study the abandoned business in the path of progress. The images are the result of an ethnological study of the current economic climate and urban development.

Each photograph becomes a contained empty space. Photographing from outside the space, the reflections on the glass give the viewer an omniscient ability. The viewer is able to simultaneously look forward into vacant space and backward on the vibrant and still active city. This two directional exploration mirrors my interest in the empty space, as I am beginning to work backwards from the empty space, to the closing store, laid off employees, and ultimately to a visionary with an idea.

Expectant as a window shopper I press my camera up to the store window exploring the business ventures. Just as Eugene Atget mapped out Paris’ disappearance to modernization, I document our economies transformation into recession. I photograph sites that are frozen under transition, sometimes failed endeavors and other times new constructions awaiting investment. The images not only record failures but they suggest new potential. In my photography, I am realtor of these two-dimensional images of three-dimensional spaces.
